How to get certified in the WTTC sustainability basics?

Hotel Sustainability Basics born in 2023 to enables tourist accommodation providers from around the world, regardless of their size, to begin their sustainability journey.It is a programme that helps hotels all over the world to obtain their sustainability certification based on 12 basic criteria.

The Hotel Sustainability Basics by WTTC, were created by the industry for the industry, they represent the 12 measures that are fundamental to sustainability in the hotel sector.

In a world where travel is becoming increasingly accessible, statistics show that tourism will continue its strong growth but, this power also comes with great responsibility, as it's one of the sectors with the most impact on the environment, society, and the economy. Hoteliers are key players in the tourism industry that is why it's essential to consider how you can implement your properties, a sustainable perspective.

In recent studies we observed that: at least 74% of travellers want travel companies, including hotels, to provide more sustainable choices. Additionally, 65% of respondents stated that they would feel better about paying for accommodation with a sustainable certification or label.

The certification programme contains 12 criterial, but accessible and easy to implement. This Basics are grouped into three areas: Efficiency, Planet and People. Of the 12 criteria, hotels will have to achieve a minimum of eight in the first year, with at least one mandatory criterion for each area, while they can commit to achieving the others and implementing them within three years as they demonstrate year-on-year improvements.
